Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Bosnia/Herzegovina

Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Bosnia/Herzegovina

We decided to celebrate Myra’s 65th birthday by taking a trip to the Adriatic Coast, another area of the world we have not yet visited. Croatia has 3600 miles of seafront and 1100 islands!

Croatia, or Hrvatska in Croatian, was formerly part of Yugoslavia (along with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro, Slovenia and Serbia).  Croatia is part of the European Union but their main currency is still the Croatian Kuna.  The rich historical and cultural heritage, the natural beauty of its islands along the Adriatic Coast and the Mediterranean climate brought 18.5 million tourists last year to this country of four million people.

The roots of the Dalmatian spotted dog trace back to Croatia (the historical region of Dalamtia)!

Our journey will begin in Zagreb, the capital and largest city in Croatia.  We plan to rent a car and over the next several days, drive to Ljubljana, Slovenia, then over to the coast to Rovinj, visit Plitvice (Croatia’s first National Park) and the beautiful lakes, then drive south to Split.  We will return our car and after a few days in the resort town of Hvar, take a  catamaran to the walled city of Dubrovnik, the Pearl of the Adriatic.  The walled, medieval Old Town of Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was used to film many scenes depicting "Kings Landing" in the HBOseries Game of Thrones.

We plan to take a few excursions – including day trips to Montenegro and  Bosnia/Herzegovina.

We are looking forward to gorgeous weather, beautiful cave bars, picnics and lakes, seafood, truffle hunting and Croatian wine (more on this later).  Our friends David & Deborah, who have traveled with us on previous trips to Africa and Peru and Bolivia, will be sharing this journey with us!
